Interesting Speculation about Amazon and PayPal

Tag: Ecommerce @ 6:55 pm

Don’t have much time to write a long post, before I head out to dinner, but I was checking some of my favorite sources and came across this article over at Barron’s Tech Trader Blog: Is Amazon Planning To Go Head-to-Head With PayPal?
What do you think? If this turns out to be true, right when eBay is pressing their advantage with PayPal all over the world. They certainly couldn’t make a case that Amazon Payments wasn’t safe.
It will be interesting to follow this story and see if it has any legs. Let me know what you think.

Asking Customers to Go Steady: Tips for Repeat Orders

Tag: Comparison Shopping Engines @ 9:00 am

Jason Billingsley and I are always on the hunt for ecommerce trends and innovations. And one of the areas Jason will be covering in Thursday’s webinar Ecommerce Innovations: What’s Now and What’s Next is loyalty programs. (There’s still time to sign up!)
Subscription options for consumables is not necessarily a new concept, but certainly an underused tactic of online retailers.
It’s far more common to see e-tailers offering tiered pricing (discounts on quantity) to increase basket size. But customers don’t always want to order a case lot of something — who has room for a year’s worth of coffee in the cupboard? Others don’t have the cash-on-hand to pre-purchase items.
Subscriptions are a great way to:

Maximize lifetime customer revenue for the item
Save customer time, storage space and money
Build long term service relationship with customer
Potentially sell more/different items over time
How Online Retailers Are Using Product Subscriptions
I first noticed […]

Off to Chicago for eBay Live!

Tag: Ecommerce @ 10:23 pm

This will probably be the only post for the next 24 hrs, since I will be travelling most of the day tomorrow (Weds.) and then I have some appointments once I arrive in Chicago. I will do my best to keep you updated via Twitter, if I hear anything really good.
I looking forward to the trip as I will be able to sit down with a number of vendors, sellers and eBay employees to get their take on the new eBay. I will be live blogging the Keynote Speech, much like I did last year and hopefully will be able to post some interesting information.
My schedule is getting pretty packed, but I would love to meet as many of you as possible, so if you see me walking around the exhibit hall, please flag me down.
This will be my 2nd eBay Live as a member of the press and I’ll […]

Trip Report: Around the World

Tag: Amazon @ 10:29 am

Last week I came back from my India and Japan trip - one of my best trips till date. It was a complete round trip around the globe - I traveled from Seattle to Mumbai (via Atlantic Ocean), traveled within India (Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata), continued to Sapporo and Tokyo in Japan (via Indian Ocean) and then came back to Seattle (via the Pacific).
I met thousands of enthusiastic people, exchanged hundreds of business cards and made tons of new friends. Most importantly, I gathered and collated lot of feedback for the service teams. Hence, If you like to get your voice heard (Feature request, comment, complaint, question), catch an AWS evangelist - look out for evangelist wiki!

This is a Great Buyer Experience!

Tag: Ecommerce @ 8:28 pm

I just checked my Amazon feedback to see if there were any interesting comments. I just passed 1,000 feedback over 6 months, so I’m still a long way away from Glacier Bay’s 265,000 feedback but its a start.
I just received the following feedback from a customer:
My double-CD arrived with a broken jewel case spool. A prompt reply with a credited discount to cover replacement costs keeps this vendor in the “Excellent” bracket. Good customer support is vital and they came through.
Now, I don’t inventory any items that have a broken case, so this must have happened in transit and had the customer actually contacted me, I would have taken care of this for them, but because I ship using FBA, Amazon handles all of my customer service. I didn’t even know there was a problem until I read the customers feedback. In fact I don’t get any emails from customers.
So, […]
