The eBay “Dead Pool”

Tag: Ecommerce @ 9:21 am

A few weeks ago I wrote about eBay cutting businesses and/or categories that are not measuring up, improving the CORE Marketplace business, or are more trouble then they are worth. It started with some simple closures like the Digital Delivery category, as well as Live Auctions.
I thought it would be fun to create a “Dead Pool” on those eBay businesses and or categories that were next on the chopping block.
Two new closures before we get started:

According to Tamebay.com, eBay Matchups is shutdown, with this announcement telling why: Thanks for using eBay Matchups over the past year and a half. It’s been a fun (and often wild) ride! Due to changing business climates, we’ve decided to let Matchups go to sleep for now while we pursue other exciting product ideas and community engagement programs. Not that there was much point to eBay Matchups in the first place.
The eBay Playground just vanished […]

Tag: Comparison Shopping Engines @ 9:00 am

A few weeks ago I sat on a social media panel at Vancouver’s Massive Technology Show. Little did I know that the social media expert sitting to my left was also a talented cartoonist. I recently discovered Social Signal’s Noise to Signal comic series, and wanted to share my Top Eleven with you. I highly suggest you sign up for the feed if you like what you see:

Stores in Search Part Deux!

Tag: Ecommerce @ 2:25 pm

Here we go again, it appears now that eBay feels they have control over search using Best Match, they are getting ready to re-introduce store items into search.
I first heard this from Ina Steiner’s blog and she was referencing a post on the eBay stores board.
Here is the survey question the seller received:
Imagine that eBay updated its current eBay Stores product offering:
In the revised eBay Stores product offering, listings in the Store Inventory Format: Would be shown in Core eBay search results with Buy It Now items and Auction items. Would have lower Insertion Fees than Buy It Now listings depending on the eBay Store product to which you subscribe (see details in table below). Would have the same Final Value Fees as Buy It Now listings.
Imagine eBay made the explained changes to the Store Inventory listing format and also introduced (30 days, Good ‘Til Cancelled) listing duration and ($0.30) […]

Bloggers Digest - 4/25/08

Tag: Comparison Shopping Engines @ 8:47 am

Well here we are with another link roundup to keep you glued to your monitors all weekend. You know, I hardly feel like I should ever be linking to these blogs at all from Blogger’s Digest. Because you should be subscribed to it and getting the goods the day they’re published, not waiting for Friday! Nevertheless, I will continue to include them for the benefit of our new subscribers and because I want Google to know how great this content is.

The toughest part is choosing one or two articles from GrokDotCom to link to. But this week I’ve chosen “How to Increase Your Cart Abandonment Rate.” I’ll spoil the ending for you - tease your customer with low or reasonable prices and save the “sticker shock” for checkout.

How can personalization improve your ROI on PPC? Get the 411 from Sitebrand with Smart, Not More […]

New Release of ElasticFox

Tag: Amazon @ 10:41 am

Many people have told me that they have used the ElasticFox extension for Firefox to get started with Amazon EC2. ElasticFox makes it easy to see the list of available AMIs (Amazon Machine Images), to launch any number of instances of those AMIs, and to monitor and manage the running instances:

We just released version 1.4 of this powerful tool. In addition to wiping out some bugs related to security groups and key management, ElasticFox now supports all of the features of the newest version of the EC2 API - Availability Zones, Elastic IPs, and user-selectable kernels. There are new tabs for kernels and ramdisks, Elastic IPs, and Availability Zones:

An IP address can be allocated and then attached to a running EC2 instance with a couple of clicks:

New instances can be launched in any availability zone, with full control of the kernel (AKI) and ramdisk (ARI):

Finally, you can now filter the […]

Google Shaking Up URLs in Search Ads?

Tag: Comparison Shopping Engines @ 8:58 am

While in London this week, Jason Billingsley spotted something different in Google search results.
If you look closely, you’ll notice the display URL in Adwords ads are above the ad copy, not below. Ad copy also appears on the same line as the display URL in some cases.
I did a quick search in Google Blogs (search within only blogs) to see if anyone has blogged about this yet or may know what’s going on. Over here in Vancouver, I still see the traditional ad display so all I can do is speculate that Google is shakin’ things up and testing the impact of different ad structure.

Jason also observed that the text appears larger than usual which indicates Google may be testing out new formatting of not only paid search but also organic.
Of course it could be handywork of an internal prankster at Google, or the equivalent to […]

Choosing a Layout and Template for Your Online Store
