More Bits for Your Money - AWS Bandwidth Pricing Reduced

We’ve been working to drive down our costs and to pass the savings along to our customers. We’ve focused on bandwidth costs and are happy to announce that the cost of outbound bandwidth (for data transferred from within AWS to the outside world) has been reduced effective May 1, 2008. The old and new costs are as follows:

Amazon Ups Customer Review Usability

We talk about Amazon often here on Get Elastic, because you’ll always find some innovation, design or usability improvement to blog about there.
Amazon sometimes attracts more reviews than customers want to read. So Amazon provides tools to filter reviews by star rating and displays the “most helpful” positive and negative review as determined by Amazon’s community.

Plus, you can also search reviews by keyword.

Which is helpful, because you don’t want to buy a product that sucks unless it’s a vacuum or a Flowbee.

New Competitor to eBay? Wigix

There have been all kinds of articles written about the launch of Wigix.com as a competitor to eBay. I’ve added several of them to MyBlogUtopia Reader, but I decided to make my way over to the site to check it out for myself.
This is not going to be an in-depth review of the site, nor is it going to be just a regurgitated press release — it is strictly my 12%.
The site looks clean and simple enough, but it just isn’t intuitive. It appears the site’s developers wanted to create a kind of NASDAQ for consumer goods — a marketplace where your inventory grows or declines in value. The metaphor is lost on me.

Optimizing for Product Colors: Long Tail Gold or Duplicate Content?

Colors are search modifiers that can bring a lot of long-tail traffic. When someone searches for a particular product and color, it often indicates someone is close to a purchase, or at least further along the sale-trail than one who goes broad.
But you can’t create a separate product page and URL for each color because that’s duplicate content, and duplicate content is the worst of sins, right? That’s what I thought until I started testing it - and it turned everything my momma ever told me about duplicate content on its head.
(If your momma never had “the talk” with you - you know, *content reproduction,* we recently did a duplicate content post that included a PG13 explanation. I made sure this post was completely different so nobody mistakes it for duplicate content).

Boba Fett + CSE = Bountii

I’m always a sucker for attention-getting Star Wars references.
But Bountii’s co-founder John Puskarich also caught my attention and this CSE is worthy of yours.  The site has some key differentiators:

For certain products, Bountii will pay people to find lower prices. There is a set bounty for specific products, and users can make as much cash as the number of deals they find.
They display "Click to See" and "Add to Cart" prices that are often left out of the feeds sellers send to shopping engines.
Products that have coupons and rebates have these deals reflected in the price, instead of being handpicked and possibly subjected to bias.
Pricing information is always displayed, no matter what the seller pays Bountii. Further, the number of stores is intentionally limited to reputable sellers delivering a quality experience.  (One example is Costco — Bountii is the only CSE on which their results are displayed).

I hardly ever listen to broadcast radio in my car anymore. Instead, I subscribe to a whole bunch of podcasts, some technical, some fun, and others educational. Here are two episodes which should be of interest to anyone who reads this blog:
The Mashable Podcast interviews Michael Crandell, CEO of RightScale. Michael talks about their product and how it helps organizations to use Amazon EC2 in a cost-effective fashion.
The IT Conversations Podcast captures Amazon CTO Werner Vogels as he talks about AWS at last years ETech conference.
You can listen to either or both of these on the respective sites or you can simply subscribe to their RSS feeds.

What is John Donahoe’s Plan?

If you are like most eBay observers, you are anxiously awaiting the “New eBay”.
Sellers want to know how it will impact their business, investors want to know how it will grow value in their holdings and bloggers want to “guess” at what it will actually be.
We may actually have a hint, in an article from John Donahoe’s past.
In 2002 as the Managing Director of Bain & Company, John Donahoe wrote an article called The Last Legacy of the Dotcom Era (special thanks to permacrisis for finding this). In the article. Mr Doanhoe makes the following statement:
